AGPFI donates BOOKS to SRES

"Educate the Young and Make them Aware"

Read to me
By: Jane Yolen
Read to me riddles and read to me rhymesRead to me stories of magical times Read to me tales about castles and kings Read to me stories of fabulous things Read to me pirates and read to me knights Read to me dragons and dragon-book fights Read to me spaceships and cowboys and then When you are finished- please read them again.

It is always nice to read poems and riddles to children to get their imaginations suspended with hopes over castles in the sky. It is better to raise their optimisms in the world we are living in through books than purge them by the certainties they could never understand during puberty. This is education, and education makes Filipinos better. - Ben S. Aclan, AG&PFI-Marketing and Information Manager/AG&P-Community Relations Manager.

The Foundation of AG&P Company of Manila, Inc. conceptualized a learning program for students aged 6 to 14 in Bauan, Batangas focused on the theme 'Educating the young and making them Aware'.

Fourth to receive the set of tomes was the San Roque Elementary School (SRES) with 29 boxes of imported books totaling 900 in heterogeneous classification for girls and boys. Math, English, Sciences, Plants, Animals, Poems and poetries, Figures, Arts, Designs, Values formation, foreign cultures & traditions, Publications, symbols, signs and the like were inventoried by SRES School Principal Mrs. Precy Belarmino assisted by Barangay Captain Leopoldo Ramos Salcedo on April 23, 2009 during its soft-turn-over ceremonies with limited guests to witness.

The project was in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Makati, Books Across the Sea (BATS) and AG&P Company of Manila Foundation, Inc. represented by Executive Director Renato M. Alarcon and Community Relations Manager Ben S. Aclan.

Founded by the idealism to educate which is essential to the corporate's social responsibility to provide services, AG&PFI went to the Rotary Club of Makati to solicit books. As early as January 2009 the foundation had been sending communications to RCM Chairman Jay Savage inviting the club to join the community services in Bauan. April 18, 2009, Ronald Dotaro, Community Relations Manager of the Rotary Club of Makati invited AG&P Marketing and Information Manager Ben S. Aclan to pick-up the volumes of books in their main office in Rockwell Makati.

The aim to deliver the most basic tool for education was motivated by the Asia Foundation on August 2007 in response to the greater demand of some communities to increase the number of reading materials and school text references inside their respective libraries.

AG&PFI circulated more than 1000 books to two (2) AG&P technical schools, San Roque Barangay Library and Quezon City Payatas GK housing library. More than 3000 students, parents and 'kabarangays' were benefited by the charitable gesture and respondent communities claim that their shelves became busier on school days and even during lean seasons.

Although the books didn't come fully free of charge, AG&PFI required the receiving institutions/communities to donate at least two pesos (P2.00) per book to ascertain steadfast concern on their donations. Communities who could not afford the perfunctory were not excluded but rather given more privileges to receive.

AG&P President Angelito D. Bermudo inspired students to become more resilient in learning trades and skills amidst present day crises. Though this temporary dilemma can be sorted out by being cost efficient and by neutral spending, education is still the best alternative to successfully bridge hopes with our future.

Reading harnesses the mind. The logical mind directs us to the right path. Choices make our future. The future can never be upturned nor changed. Books are the cheapest means to safeguard our future.

The foundation's book campaign is progressively becoming popular in Batangas as teachers begin to subscribe in the AG&P Foundation's learning philosophy, "The more books we distribute, the more people we educate".
